Yasmin/Yaz (Drospirenone)Television commercials over-market birth control pills. They typically use multiple psychology tricks in order to increase the percentage of sales, but it has a damaging effect upon consumers. Young women all over the world are exposed to dangerous consequences after using oral contraceptives (Yaz or Yasmine, for example). Failing to adequately warn patients and physicians about an increased risk of serious side effects is a crime, so if you or a loved one suffered from serious health problems while or after taking this drug, consider hiring a personal injury attorney.

WHAT IS DROSPIRENONE?

Drospirenone is a synthetic hormone in birth control pills and postmenopausal hormone replacement. It is used in order to prevent ovulation (the part of the female menstrual cycle, when a mature ovarian follicle discharges an egg), causing

modifications in your cervical and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. It is sold as a combined oral contraceptive (COCP), under the brand name of Yasmin or Yaz/Yasminelle in United States, EU and Latin America.

WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

Drospirenone (progestin) in combination with ethyl estradiol (synthetic estrogen) are put in use in some birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy, to inhibit female fertility, treat symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and moderate acne in women. Do not forget that birth control pills do not protect you from HIV (AIDS) or any STD’s. Moreover, some clinical studies demonstrated that 1 woman of 100 may get pregnant during the first year using Yasmin.

In May 11, 2001 FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved Yasmin for birth control and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

MEDICAL PRESCRIPTIONS. HOW TO AND HOW NOT TO USE YASMIN

Follow exactly your doctor’s prescriptions, or follow instructions on your prescription label. Typically, you should take 1 pill orally each day, in the order directed on the package. In addition, you should decide what time of the day fits the best for this purpose. Consider not changing it later.Yasmin/Yaz (Drospirenone)

You should not take control pills if you have the following medical conditions:

  • Heart disease, uncontrolled and untreated high blood pressure, circulation problems, had a heart attack, a stroke or a blood clot;
  • Gallbladder disease;
  • Seizures or epilepsy;
  • A history of irregular menstrual cases;
  • Tuberculosis;
  • A history of fibrocystic breast disease;
  • Lumps, nodules, or an abnormal mammogram;
  • Problems with eyes, kidneys or circulation problems;
  • Severe renal insufficiency, adrenal insufficiency;
  • Diabetic problems with your kidneys;
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding;
  • Liver disease or cancer;
  • Severe migraine headaches;
  • Breast or uterine cancer.

Also, you shouldn’t take Yasmin if you smoke cigarettes and are over 35 years old, because smoking increases the risk of a cardiovascular disease, (including death from heart-attack, blood clots, and vessel problems), and the risk is higher because in combination with this drug. Do not skip any pills, even if you don’t have sex often.

Note: You should not take control pills if you are pregnant or if you have recently had a baby (Yasmine passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant).

Women who practice taking birth control pills that contain drospirenone are in the group of risk of developing thromboembolism, so be careful with the dosage. Moreover, missing a pill increases the chance of getting pregnant. There is no contraceptive that will be 100% efficient, so discuss with your doctor all the possible options.

Also: Tell your doctor about your medical conditions and don’t miss the information about other medications you currently use. Before using oral contraceptives, consider checking whether you are exposed to allergies.

As any other kind of medication, drospirenone in combination with ethinyl estradiol has its side effects. Don’t hesitate asking for a medical help in case that you have signs of an allergic reaction: heavy breathing, hives, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), drospirenone can lead to hyperkalemia, a condition caused by excessive amounts of potassium in blood, in high risk patients.

The most common side effects that Yasmin consumers might have:

  • Breast lump,
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT);
  • Pulmonary Embolism;
  • Depression due to low levels of serotonin, hypertension, leucorrhea (increased vaginal secretions), reductions in menstrual flow, nausea, vomiting, blood pressure;
  • Facial skin discoloration;
  • Sudden weakness (especially on one side of the body),
  • Severe headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech or balance, pain (swelling, warmth or redness in one or both legs).
  • A change in the pattern or severity of migraine headaches, sleep problems, weakness, mood changes, changes in weight or appetite,
  • Vaginal itching or discharge, changes in your menstrual period.

Also less common side effects might occur:

  • Loss in sexual ability, desire, drive or performance, reductions in libido or decreased lubrication,
  • Delusions of persecution, mistrust, suspiciousness, crying, irritability,
  • Weight gain,
  • Quick to react or overreact emotionally,
  • Longer or heavier menstrual periods,
  • Vomiting,
  • Normal menstrual bleeding occurring earlier, possibly lasting longer than expected.

In combination with any other medication (such as antibiotics, hepatitis C medications, seizure medications, sedatives) oral contraceptives tend to be less effective.

REPORTED PROBLEMS AND LAWSUITS

The side effects of a birth control pill might be a very risky health experience. They usually cause a serious number of heart and blood disorders that are difficult to cure. Following complications are included: deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, gallbladder disease, heart attack, pulmonary embolism.

Thousands of Yasmin consumers claimed that this medication is life threatening and tried to sue Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals for compensation subsequently. The main charge was that this company did not properly warn about all those serious side effects, which caused dangerous consequences.

From 2004 to 2008, FDA reports of at least 50 deaths linked to the pills. It has to be mentioned that on October 1, 2009 United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated all Yasmin/Yaz Personal Injury and wrongful deaths lawsuits. By July 19, 2012 almost 1,900 “blood clots” settled cases without admission of liability and Bayer paid $402.6 million in settlements for the category of “clot cases”. By July 2013Bayer has settled 6,760 US plaintiffs that resulted in $1.4 billion. From February, 2014 Bayer agreed, without admission of liability, to settle 8,250 claims in the U.S. which totaled in $1.69 billion, only for venous clot injuries.

These lawsuits claimed that Yasmin causes lethal blood clots and gallbladder damage and that Bayer overstated the benefits of the medication, while marketing it.
